Not according to plan

Well the trip has taken a definite memorable turn. You hear travel horror stories, but as many trips as I have taken, nothing really ever goes that bad. Once a friend of mine had a bag that didn't show up, but the next day it was at the airport. Today was my first taste of bad.

I checked out of the hotel, took the car back to Thrifty and made it to the airport by noon for my 1:45 flight. Check in was easy, security was a breeze and I found myself at the Harpoon tap room just down from my gate with plenty of time to spare. Even managed to get upgraded to first class, although I chuckled because the flight from Boston to New York is about 35 minutes. So far so good.

We board the plane and there is water waiting in the seat. The stewardess came around and gave a soda and snack. There was a guy on the plane who was ticked he wasn't in first class. He actually had a good seat - one row behind first class, but that was the first row with two seats, so he had no seat in front of him. Lots of leg room. Maybe he wanted the services? But again, it's a half hour flight. He talked to the flight attendant and she said there wasn't anyone in row 1 right now, so he could sit there. 15 minutes from when we were supposed to take off (but were still there), this old couple comes on the plane and takes the seats in row 1, bumping this guy back to his original seat. Now, granted - they shouldn't even be on that flight because it should have already been airborne. Anyway, he was pissed, argued with the flight attendant who was giving it right back. Sitting back in his seat we sit on at the gate for a while with the captain saying JFK has a lot of traffic and we have to wait until 2:15 instead of our original 1:45. Still okay - they add plenty of time to the flight estimation to allow for that. 2:30 we are still there and I start getting worried. The flight to Frankfurt takes off at 5:00 and boarding begins at 4:00. Still time. We taxi down the run way, drive around for a long time. It looks like we are set to go, but then a left turn away from the runway spelled trouble. The Captain came on and said we have to wait 90 minutes to take off and we didn't have enough fuel, so we were headed back to the gate. The new take off time would get us to JFK after out flight to Germany was to take off.

What made it worse is there is a third companion on the trip currently in New York that we were supposed to meet and fly together to Germany - so we had to get her bumped off her flight, book a flight for her from NY to Boston. Needless to say, after 1:33 minutes on the phone, that was worked out, the trip to Germany cancelled and flights back to Phoenix rebooked for Tuesday. Her flight was supposed to arrive at 6:30, but it didn't show up until 8:30.

What about our bags? They were checked and the airline was not pulling them off. They went on to JFK, and I presume didn't make it to Germany because flight tracker showed the JFK flight finally landed at 5:06 and the Germany flight took off at 5:12. Our third companion had a missing bag as well. The baggage folks confirmed her bag was located and would be on the 10:33 flight...so we waited and that flight finally showed up around midnight. Our bags were not on there.

So, no Germany, which was my entire point of the trip. No bag, so I have no clothes except what I am wearing. Four days in Boston with no itinerary and we only have this hotel for tonight. Who knows what the rest of the trip will bring? It isn't looking too promising at this point.

Salem, MA

Today was really quiet. I had to do some schoolwork and work on the large final paper that is due this coming Monday. I wanted to get a big chunk of it completed now because I don't really want to do it in Germany, and it is 25% of my grade, so I need to do it.

The only thing I did today was take a break in Salem. No Boston Hot dog for me this time. Instead, I went to Cap't Table and it was not a good experience. Working on a Yelp review for that. Slow service is an understatement. A nice visit to Salem Willows Park on a beautiful day. Definitely warmer than it has been the past couple of days.

Dinner came from the Homewood Suites manager's reception - and the General Manager was very attractive. How you doin'?! Back to school - I did manage to finish the paper, but I do have some cleanup to do on it this week. That's cool. I will have internet in Germany and the cleanup won't take long. Time for bed as I get ready to go to the airport tomorrow for Germany!

Baseball Hall of Fame

Another long road trip today. Leaving Niagara Falls, it was back in the US and an early morning stop at the Batavia Bob Evans. There was a crabby old woman there that was the hostess. She was fine to me, but a Mennonite family game in with 12 people and she was a little moody with them.

Before hitting the road, it was one more drive past the falls to get a good look. At 6 AM there was no one on the road or at the falls - but it was still wet and cold. Since I wasn't going back to Sleepy Hollow, I didn't have to go all the way back down and across CT. Instead, it was Buffalo to Rochester, Syracuse and a stop around Utica where I went down to Cooperstown to the Baseball Hall of Fame. $16.50 to tour the museum and it was enjoyable. Nice selection of equipment, old baseball cards, memorabilia and on top of that, the plaques. I spent about 1.5 hours before leaving. I was so hungry! The Cooperstown Diner was just down the road and I stopped for a bite to eat. The biggest hot dogs and hamburgers I have ever seen and the best milkshake I have had in my life!

Still the drive was long and I was glad to make it to Peabody, MA and check into the Homewood Suites!

Niagara Falls

Impressive! I wasn't sure what to expect with Niagara Falls. I figured it would be a tourist trap, but it was really cool. When I arrived yesterday, it was hard to see - the hotel had a great view of the falls from my room, but it was dark. Even though the falls were lit until midnight, I couldn't see the water leading to it, and from what I could see, it didn't look like that much. When I awoke and looked out the window, it was exciting. I really wanted to get down and explore!

I had plans to take the jet boat through the whirlpool, the Maid in the Mist and the Wind of the Caves - but unfortunately, it was too cold. I heard last week it was 60's-70's, but today it was only in the 50's. That was a high and it only went down from there. I am sure that I saw some snow from my room.

I did get down to the falls, taking the incline railway down to the falls. I bought the poncho and due to the weather, a hat from the gift shop. Just the mist walking along the sidewalk was so heavy, it felt like rain. I was so cold from that, there is no way I wanted to get beat down by wave after wave on the whirlpool boat. Afterwards, I needed to stop by the Starbucks for a warm drink!

Otherwise, I didn't leave the hotel. It was a very peaceful and relaxing day!

Sleepy Hollow

Today was a long drive across New York. Yesterday I stopped in Bethleham, NH, which apparently is the poetry capitol of New Hampshire, so today, it was Sleepy Hollow, NY. Leaving Boston at 6 AM, it was good to get on the road early. Drove down through CT and into NY. Sleepy Hollow isn't too far once you cross the NY border.

The town is small and definitely the cemetary is the big attraction. Before the trip I did some research online and ordered a guidebook to the Old Dutch cemetary from the Sleepy Hollow Gift Shop. I walked through the Old Dutch church as well as the newer cemetary next door. After some searching, I found Washington Irving's grave, as well as Catarina Van Tressel - inspiration for the Legend of Sleepy Hollow book.

Back on the road around 1pm, I made it to Batavia, NY before stopping at Bob Evans for dinner. The night ended up crossing the Canadian border and arriving in Niagara Falls at the Embassy Suites. After a long trip, it was nice to get in and hit a nice, hot shower.

White Mountains, NH

With nothing specific on the itinerary today, I drove up north through New Hampshire. I really enjoy this state and have thought many times that one day I might live here. Up through Manchester and past Squam Lake (known to many as the lake in On Golden Pond), I decided to take in some of the White Mountains today.

Leaving Billerica this morning, the skies were overcast, but no rain. As I traveled further north, there was spots of rain and eventually, believe it or not, snow! Definitely cold for mid May. Like most road trips, I kept the stops to a minimum, with the exception of a few photo ops. I hit McDonalds for a sweet tea and a cheeseburger around lunch and once again in the afternoon for another tea. In pursuit of one McDonalds I eventually turned around when the road traveled appeared to take too long. One bad thing about New England road exits, they give you the direction the gas/room/food is, but not the distance. Often it is not right off the road. When I turned around I was surprised to see the Office of the Sherriff – a correctional facility called the Middlesex House of Corrections. It was surprisingly beautiful – it looked like a resort from a distance…but the barbed wire gave hint that it was something more. I finally settled for McDonalds in Tifton, NH.

Back on the road I was surprised by the town of Conway, NH. I had not previously been there, but I would like to go back and visit some warmer day. The North Conway Scenic Railway was just down the road, and while I stopped for a photo, no time to ride the train. And like I said, it was cold. North Conway also brought the second McDonalds. It was newly refurbished and so interesting and unique, I had to yelp it: http://www.yelp.com/biz/mcdonalds-hamburgers-north-conway#hrid:d_Sj6a4uj0afRayZll5fFw/src:self

Further down the road I noticed a photographer with a tripod on the side of the road. It was an impressive waterfall called Silver Cascade. I stopped and snapped a few photos before jogging back to the car. Uphill and in the chilly wind – that might be a precursor for the Trollinger run next week. Yikes!

While driving through the backgrounds I was surprised once again – wildlife typically avoids me on trips, but there along the side of the road – a moose! I don’t know anything about moose, but I would say it was a young one. It stood there for a few seconds, but as a slowly pulled the car closer, it walked into the woods. Since he continued on his way, I followed suit. I didn’t take the Mt Washington Auto Road, mainly because I didn’t want to pay. Instead I drove the highways through the mountains and headed back West and over into Vermont.

For dinner I stopped at Foster’s Boiler, which is a Common Man restaurant in Plymouth, NH. I remembered that in 2007 I ran the Pemi co-op Covered Bridge 5K held in Plymouth, but I didn’t realize until I passed the building next to the train track that Plymouth was also where I met Rudy Giuliani in 2008. The room was packed that day and as the local guy was talking to the people seated inside, I was standing in the back of the room. At one point I looked to my left and Rudy was standing next to me awaiting his cue. So this was at least my third trip through Plymouth. Like most New Hampshire towns, it was small and I could definitely live there.

About an hour back to the hotel and I was in for the night. A Mother’s Day call to my mom to wish her well, let her know I made it to New England and wish her well on an upcoming trip to South Dakota and I was finished for the night. 5:00 AM wake up call for tomorrow. A long drive from Billerica to Niagara Falls, Canada.

Room change

As I always say, all plans are soft. I am in the hotel room, room 325 and preparing to settle in for the evening. Took a shower, set up the computer, etc. then unfolded the sleeper sofa. It smelled bag - like someone peed the bed. Looking over the fabric covering the mattress, it appeared to be yellow. I wasn't going to touch it. Yuck! I called down to the front desk and explained the situation. The attendant offered to move me to another room. It meant packing up, going down in my PJs, but no big deal. The weird thing about this hotel is that the odd rooms are on one side, the evens on another but you cannot just walk from one to the other. It requires an elevator ride down to the lobby, a transfer to another elevator and a ride back up. About 10 minutes and the process was complete. Thanks to Homewood Suites for making the change without hassle.

Billerica MA: Day One

The flight into MA was fairly smooth. No working entertainment system on the plane would have made it tough, but I had a few magazines as well as Book of Souls by Glenn Cooper to pass the time. Boston was overcast and rainy, which made for a little bumpy ride approaching the airport.

I picked up the rental car at Thrifty - a Ford Fusion. The new luggage filled the truck to capacity, which could cause issues in Germany. I am sure the trunk there will be smaller. What a rain on the way to the hotel! Definitely qualified as a gullywasher.

After a short stop at CVS, I made my way to the Homewood Suites in Billerica. I have stayed at this hotel probably a dozen times over the years. Nice, wooded area. Free internet, free breakfast and during the week a free manager's dinner. None of that this time as I am only here Saturday & Sunday. Good ole' room 325. I have been in this room multiple times, so it kind of feels like home away from home.

Dinner time and I ended up at the Naked Fish, which is just down the access road from Homewood Suites. I had the orange balsamic salmon with the mango salsa, the sweet potatoes with banana (sounds weird, I know), and the plantains. The plantains were not as good as I used to get at the Cabbagetown Grill in Atlanta, but they were a close second. The waitress was cute, which was helpful, because she certainly was slow. I asked her to box the left overs and after she took them back she mistakenly threw it out. Good news was she offered a free dessert to make up for it.

Not bad - 8:30 local time and in for the night. No real plans for tomorrow. Just play it by ear and see what happens.

Boarding for salt lake

It always amazes me to see the challenges people
have getting on planes. Bringing too much stuff, trying
to ram it in the overhead bins, not reading the seat
numbers and generally acting like it's their visit day at
the rodeo. Then once they are down they immediately
want something from their bag. Or it's 10 trips to the
bathroom. You can't hold it that long? Go before you board!

So the airport experience has been good. Short lines at
5 am. A drink and scone from starbucks and now on the
plane. About to take off. The flight is mostly empty. Door closed
and I have a row to myself. Only 3 people in the four emergency
rows.

Time to go

T-Minus 24 hours

Tomorrow morning is the big day - need to spend today finishing up house cleaning, stopping the mail, some school work and last minute packing. Purchased some new luggage at Kohl's last weekend for the trip. The large suitcase I typically use I swiped from my Mom when I flew to Ohio for my Dad's funeral and didn't have enough luggage to carry some things hope. That bag has seen its better days. In fact it doesn't even have the pulleys on the zipper anymore. You have to rub the zipper around for it to move - not good!

Another big attraction with the Wurtemburg region of Germany is Trollinger wine (hence the name of the marathon). When I lived in Atlanta, the DeKalb Farmer's Market carried a wine made with Trollinger grapes and I ordered most of what they had. My grandmother and father were able to have the Emporium in Yellow Springs, OH order some as well - but those distributors have since went out of business and Trollinger wine is difficult at best to get here in the states. There is a winery in Iowa that grows a domestic version, but they do not sell direct - they only ship to wine merchants. Trouble with Arizona is that wine can only be imported through an Arizona distributor, so there goes that. Short story long, people want me to bring some back. I can't carry it on because it is over 3 oz. I can't ship it internationally - so that means checked luggage. Here's the plan - I don't need two bags, but thanks to my Delta Silver Medallion status (repping the low rung, but hey, it's got perks!) I get two free bags. Inside my big, unfilled suitcase will be my Dad's old Air Force duffle bag. Coming back, clothes can go in there, wine in the suitcase and there you have it. At least that's how it looks on paper.

Might have to hit up a happy hour tonight in celebration of the journey tomorrow. First leg: Phoenix to Salt Lake City.

Preparing for Boston

Here it is Wednesday, and the trip originally booked almost 3 months ago is just days away. The idea for the trip started in 2007 or 2008 when I discovered the Trollinger marathon in Heilbronn, Germany. I wanted to run it last year, but didn’t – thinking instead I should do my first marathon in celebration of my 40th birthday. Now it is 2010 and technically I am not 40 until September, and like most of my runs, I have not trained – so instead I listened to advice from my coworker and registered for the half marathon. I have completed 5 half marathons, so the distance isn’t new, but the elevation of the Bavarian Alps will be new as will be international running. This fits in my goal of joining the 7 Continents Club by running a half or full marathon on all 7 continents. North America: check, and soon to come, Europe. As long as the ash clouds from the Icelandic volcano cooperate, the flight should be fine. I have a week or so to worry about that.

Right now it is thinking about the itinerary and packing. The first flight leaves Saturday at 6AM on Delta from Phoenix to Salt Lake City. After a one hour layover, I take off for Boston. I should get in around 4:30 on May 8 and will spend a few days stateside seeing sights that I have missed with each prior trip to New England. One thing to know about my traveling technique – the destination of the flight and typically the hotel serve only as a base of operations. Often the trip diverts from there.

Among the highlights tentatively planned (as I say, all plans are soft). I have not worked out the 2 days in Boston yet, but I do know I am staying at the Homewood Suites in Peabody, MA. I have stayed there maybe 10 times in the past, often in the same room – déjà vu … Leaving Boston, I am headed to Niagara Falls for 2 days. I have never been there, so I am hoping to ride the Maid of the Mist, the Whirlpool Jet Tour (which could be scary since I do not know how to swim – hope I don’t go overboard), and the Cave of the Winds. Also I want to swing by Cooperstown, NY to the baseball hall of fame and over to Sleep Hollow, NY to look for headless horsemen…

I know – sounds ambitious. That’s why the packing now is crucial. Many people might be happy with a trip to Boston, or a trip to Niagara Falls, or a trip to Germany – all 3 in a 10 day span is definitely action packed. Jet boat tours, boat rides, waterfalls, half marathons – the adventure begins!
